چکیده

ALTHOUGH the toxic effects of streptomycin on the eighth nerve are well known, it is perhaps not so widely appreciated that loss of vision may complicate the administration both of streptomycin and of chloramphenicol. A patient is described who became partially blind during combined streptomycin and chloramphenicol therapy and in whom streptomycin was at first considered to be the toxic agent. However, from a review of the world literature, it is evident that either drug may be incriminated.

Effect of R-factor-mediated drug-metabolizing enzymes on survival of Escherichia coli K-12 in presence of ampicillin, chloramphenicol, or streptomycin.

Escherichia coli K-12 carrying the R-factor R1 is resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and streptomycin. This resistance is due to R-factor-coded enzymes that metabolize the drugs. The effects of these enzymes on the survival of cell populations were studied in the presence of high concentrations of antibiotics. For all three antibiotics there were considerable inoculum effects. For ampici...

Effect of a Salmonella group H1 R factor on virulence and response of infections to antimicrobial therapy.

A group H1 R factor encoding resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamide, and tetracycline was transferred into Salmonella typhimurium LT-2. The virulence of LT-2 for mice, as assessed by intraperitoneal 50% lethal dose and the number of organisms in the spleen, was not affected by the R factor. On the other hand, the R factor conferred resistance in mouse infections to therapy wit...

Successful treatment of Pseudomonas cepacia endocarditis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

A patient with a history of alcoholism and drug abuse who developed Pseudomonas cepacia endocarditis is described. The organism was found to be resistant in vitro to all common antimicrobial agents except chloramphenicol and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Treatment failed with penicillin and streptomycin and later with chloramphenicol. Orally administered trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, however,...

Frequency of R factor-mediated multiple drug resistance in Klebsiella and Aerobacter.

A comparative study was done on the transfer frequency of R factors from 90 strains of multiple drug-resistant Aerobacter and 81 strains of Klebsiella to Escherichia coli CSH-2 (F(-), met(-), pro(-), Nal-r). The most common resistance patterns for the Aerobacter isolants were ampicillin streptomycin chloramphenicol tetracycline and ampicillin streptomycin chloramphenicol tetracycline kanamycin ...
